EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken on March 6, 1961, visitors are seen exploring the newly built Baden Powell House in South Kensington, London. The site, which is now a scouting hostel and conference venue, was acquired in 1956, and Ralph Tubbs was appointed as the architect. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Olave Baden-Powell in 1959, and the building was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II the following year. The modernist architecture of Baden Powell House, with its clean lines and expansive windows, is a testament to the innovative design of the time. The building's construction was completed just in time for the 1961 opening, as evidenced by the scaffolding still present in the image. The interior of the building is not visible in this photograph, but it too was designed with functionality and efficiency in mind, providing ample space for the growing scouting movement. Baden Powell House received numerous accolades for its design and construction, reflecting the high regard in which it was held within the architectural community. The building's history is an important part of the scouting movement in the United Kingdom, and it continues to serve as a hub for scouting activities and events today. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the excitement and anticipation surrounding the completion of this iconic building.
