EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph, taken from Dr. F.A. Schmidts Petrefactenbuch, published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1855 by Verlag von Krais & Hoffmann, showcases the skull of the extinct Rhinoceros schleirmacheri alongside the skeleton of the Irish Elk, Cervus megaceros. Dr. Schmidts' Book of Petrification was a groundbreaking work that introduced both the specialist and general reader to the fascinating world of fossils and palaeontology. The Rhinoceros schleirmacheri, also known as the "Middle Rhinoceros," was a large, heavily-built herbivore that roamed Europe during the Middle Miocene epoch, around 13 to 11 million years ago. Its skull, depicted in this lithograph, reveals powerful jaws and horns, adaptations that would have been essential for its survival in its open grassland habitat. The Irish Elk, or Megaloceros giganteus, is also shown in this illustration, albeit in the form of its skeleton. This extinct species of deer was one of the largest animals to have ever lived in Europe, with antlers that could reach up to 12 feet in width. The Irish Elk inhabited Europe during the Pleistocene epoch, around 1.1 million to 10,000 years ago. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this lithograph serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrators of the time. Dr. Schmidts' Petrefactenbuch was a significant contribution to the field of palaeontology, providing a visual record of the natural world as it existed millions of years ago. This image, in particular, offers a unique glimpse into the prehistoric fauna of Europe and the rich history of scientific discovery.
