The Irish Guards had launched a dawn raid on a university/factory complex on the outskirts of Basra, coming under heavy fire from Iraqi forces. Small arms, mortars, and SAM missile systems were deployed against the British Lynx helicopter supporting the Irish Guards. Undeterred, the soldiers pressed on, clearing the base and securing the area. The photograph, taken by WO2 Giles Penfound of Army Media Operations, captures the intensity and danger of the situation.
