EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a special moment in the history of St Mary's Home in Felixstowe, Suffolk, as its founders, Mary and Vera Growse, are surrounded by their family in 1931. The sisters had established the home in Bildeston around 1893, providing a safe haven for girls in need. By the time this image was taken, the home had moved to its new location at Wolsey Gardens in Felixstowe. Mary and Vera's dedication to the welfare of these girls was unwavering, and their efforts were soon recognized by the Waifs and Strays Society. In 1931, the society formally took over the running of St Mary's Home, allowing the Growse sisters to focus on their own health and retirement. The photograph shows Mary and Vera, both in their sixties, flanked by their loved ones. Mary, the elder sister, is seated in a wheelchair, her expression thoughtful and serene. Vera, dressed in a smart suit, stands behind her, her arms protectively around her sister's shoulders. The sisters' nephews and nieces gather around them, their faces filled with affection and admiration. The backdrop to this heartwarming scene is the beautiful gardens of St Mary's Home, with its well-tended lawns and blooming flowers. The home, which continued to provide a nurturing environment for girls in need for many decades, remains an important part of Felixstowe's history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sisters' tireless work and the love and support they provided to countless girls over the years.
