Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - Ethiopia

Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - Ethiopia, bearing the portrait of Menelik II. These cards enabled collectors to see stamps which they were unable to obtain, or afford. There is a complete set of 180 cards, some of the smaller countries had a very low printing run and are hence very rare. Used Zeiher cards are very hard to find as the embossed stamp design was not approved by postal authorities as it confused the function of the proper stamps! Date: circa 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar features the portrait of Menelik II, Emperor of Ethiopia, and is a captivating example of early 20th century philately. Zeihar's Stamp Cards were a popular alternative for collectors who were unable to obtain or afford the actual stamps of various countries, including Ethiopia. With a complete set consisting of 180 cards, these montages provided a visual representation of the stamps in question. The card bearing the image of Menelik II is particularly rare, as some smaller countries had very low printing runs. The embossed stamp design on these cards, which mimicked the appearance of actual stamps, was not approved by postal authorities, leading to their scarcity in used condition. Published by Ottmar Zeihar around 1904, these cards showcase an intriguing blend of art and communication history. Each card is a montage of various stamps from the featured country, accompanied by the country's crest or coat of arms. The cards serve as a fascinating glimpse into the regional diversity of stamps during this era. The Zeihar Stamp Cards offer a unique perspective on the world of philately, showcasing the beauty and intrigue of stamps from various countries and regions. Their rarity and unusual design make them an attractive addition to any collection, making them a valuable find for serious collectors and enthusiasts of postal history.
