Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - German East Africa
Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - German East Africa (a German colony in the African Great Lakes region, which included what are now Burundi, Rwanda, and the mainland part of present Tanzania). These cards enabled collectors to see stamps which they were unable to obtain, or afford. There is a complete set of 180 cards, some of the smaller countries had a very low printing run and are hence very rare. Used Zeiher cards are very hard to find as the embossed stamp design was not approved by postal authorities as it confused the function of the proper stamps! Date: circa 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar in German East Africa, circa 1904. The stamp card was an ingenious creation that allowed collectors to admire stamps they were unable to obtain or afford. A complete set of these cards consists of 180 examples, with some smaller countries having very limited printing runs, making them exceptionally rare and highly sought after. Finding used Zeiher cards is a challenging task as the embossed stamp design on these cards was not approved by postal authorities due to its potential confusion with proper stamps. Nevertheless, this unique piece of philatelic history offers us a glimpse into the world of early 20th-century stamp collecting. The image features a montage selection from various countries and regions within German East Africa. Each card proudly displays the crest or coat of arms representing their respective country. This unusual regional collection provides insight into the diverse cultures and identities present in this German colony situated in the African Great Lakes region. Published by Mary Evans Prints Online, this print preserves an important aspect of our pastime's history while also highlighting the beauty and value associated with philately. It serves as a reminder that even though time may have passed since these stamps were circulated, their significance remains intact for both collectors and enthusiasts alike.
