EDITORS COMMENTS
This bronze statuette, standing approximately 18 inches tall, depicts Captain Sir Eyre Massey Shaw (1828-1908), a pioneering figure in the history of the London Fire Brigade. The statue was created by Prince Victor of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and is inscribed on the base with the words "To The Extinguisher from Some of His Chums, 1870." Shaw served as Superintendent of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and its predecessor, the London Fire Engine Establishment, from 1861 to 1891. During his tenure, he introduced modern firefighting methods, increasing the number of fire stations and improving the training and equipment of firefighters. The statue, which is kept in the dining room of the Massey Shaw Suite at Winchester House, Southwark Training Centre, is a testament to Shaw's heroic legacy. An identical copy can also be found at Windsor Castle. The statue portrays Shaw in his firefighting uniform, complete with brass helmet, Edwardian-era boots, and a fireman's lamp in hand. Shaw's bravery and dedication to the fire service are captured in the intricate details of the sculpture, from the creases in his uniform to the determined expression on his face. The statue serves as a reminder of the important role that firefighters have played in protecting communities throughout history. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the 1870s and the era of Victorian and Edwardian firefighting. The inscription on the base, "To The Extinguisher from Some of His Chums," speaks to the camaraderie and brotherhood that exists among firefighters, a bond that continues to this day. The statue is a treasured artifact, not only for the London Fire Brigade but for the history of firefighting as a whole.
