Sub Machine Gun, Austen, 9 Mm Mk I
Australian Austen Mk I 9 mm sub machine gun, 1942-1945 (c); with bakelite grips and camouflaged with green paint. In 1941 Australia possessed no home manufactured sub-machine gun although the Owen SMG was in the initial stages of production. The Australians therefore produced a modified Sten with a mainspring, bolt and folding butt derived from the German MP40 weapon, the Austen (Australian Sten). Date: 1942

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures an Austen Mk I 9 mm sub machine gun, a weapon that played a significant role in Australia's military history during World War II. In 1941, with no home-manufactured sub-machine gun available, the Australians turned to producing a modified version of the Sten gun, which was in its initial stages of production. The Austen, as it came to be known, was derived from the German MP40 weapon, with its mainspring, bolt, and folding butt taken from the German design. The Austen sub-machine gun, as seen in this image, features bakelite grips and camouflaged green paint. The bakelite grips provided a more comfortable grip for the soldier, while the green paint helped to blend the weapon into its surroundings, enhancing the element of surprise during combat. The Austen was produced between 1942 and 1945, during a critical period in the war when Australia was under threat from Japanese invasion. The weapon proved to be effective and reliable, and was used extensively by Australian troops in various theaters of war, including New Guinea and Borneo. The Austen Mk I 9 mm sub machine gun is an important part of Australia's military history, representing the country's ingenuity and resilience during a time of war. Its legacy continues to be celebrated, as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served their country during World War II.
