EDITORS COMMENTS
December 1, 1909: A Warm Welcome and Farewell in Suburban America This illustration captures the essence of suburban hospitality as experienced by a fortunate guest on a crisp Christmas Eve. Arriving at the doorstep of a quintessential suburban family home, he is greeted with open arms, offered a refreshing drink, and seated at the head of the table to carve the succulent turkey. The evening continues with the warmth of family traditions as they decorate the Christmas tree together, sharing stories and laughter. As the children are put to bed, the guest joins the family patriarch in the snowy backyard, reviewing architectural plans for a new home. The tranquility of the moment is interrupted only by the distant sound of a train, a reminder of the guest's impending departure. The stillness of the night gives way to the joyful chaos of Christmas morning. The guest is awakened by the melodies of children playing musical instruments and the cries of delight as they open their presents. A hearty breakfast follows, fueling the guest for an invigorating sled ride with the children. As the day comes to a close, the guest prepares to leave, but not before sharing one last moment with his hosts. Sitting on an outdoor bench at the Welcomehurst train station, he is left with a sense of warmth and belonging, knowing that he has been a part of a cherished suburban holiday tradition.
