EDITORS COMMENTS
Pank-A-Squith: A Suffragette Board Game of 1909 Step back in time to the early 20th century and immerse yourself in the world of the suffragette movement with this board game, Pank-A-Squith. First advertised in the pages of Votes for Women magazine in October 1909, this highly artistic table game was designed to help spread the suffrage movement's message far and wide. The game board, featuring 50 intricately detailed and colorful squares, represents the journey of a suffragette as she attempts to make her way from her home to the Houses of Parliament. Along the way, she faces a series of challenges and various incidents that were all too familiar to the suffragettes of the time. Each square showcases a vignette depicting significant locations and figures of the suffrage movement. From 10 Downing Street and Trafalgar Square to Hyde Park Demonstrations and Holloway Prison, the board is a visual representation of the suffragettes' struggle for women's rights. The game includes six metal suffragette figures, each dressed in sashes and scrolls, to move around the board. The base of the board is adorned with the suffragettes' colors of purple, white, and green stripes. Notable figures and incidents depicted on the board include Emmeline Pankhurst, Inspector Jarvis, Prime Minister Asquith, Tax Resistance, The Suffragette Dreadnought, Hunger Strikers, and the forging of suffragette brand handcuffs. Pank-A-Squith was more than just a game; it was a tool used to educate and engage people in the suffrage movement. By playing the game, individuals could gain a better understanding of the challenges and sacrifices the suffragettes faced in their fight for women's rights. This unique piece of history is a testament to the determination and resilience of the suffragettes and serves as a reminder of the progress that has been made in the fight for gender equality.
