EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-painted ceramic figure represents a bold and determined African-American suffragette, advocating for women's right to vote. The figure, standing at 15cm tall, was meticulously crafted by Schafer & Vater, a renowned German ceramics firm established in 1890. The suffragette is depicted wearing a corset and short bloomers, accessorized with a brown club in her right hand and a "Votes for Women" sign in her left. Her expressive features, including a wide-open mouth and wild eyes, convey the intensity and passion of her cause. Though not an exact likeness, this figure is often referred to as the representation of Sojourner Truth, a prominent African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Born as Isabella Baumfree in 1797, Sojourner Truth dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of both women and African Americans. Her powerful speeches, such as the "Ain't I a Woman?" address, inspired generations of activists and continue to resonate today. This ceramic figure, created circa 1910, is a testament to the enduring spirit of the suffragette movement and the unwavering determination of women like Sojourner Truth. It serves as a reminder of the significant strides made towards gender equality and the ongoing efforts to ensure that all voices are heard and represented in society.
