EDITORS COMMENTS
This ceramic figure depicts a passionate and determined suffragette, dressed in the colors of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) - purple, white, and green. Her wild eyes convey a sense of urgency and intensity as she waves a flag bearing the bold inscription, "I Want a Vote." The base of the figure carries another powerful message, "Give me a Vote and See What I'll Do!" This evocative ceramic piece was inspired by a design created by renowned British artist John Hassall in 1912. Hassall was commissioned by the National League for Opposing Women's Suffrage to produce posters and postcards for propaganda purposes. Despite the commission coming from an organization against women's suffrage, Hassall's design effectively captured the spirit and determination of the suffragette movement. The figure was expertly crafted by the German firm Schafer & Vater, known for their high-quality ceramics. Standing at a height of 13cm, this collectible piece is a testament to the enduring power of art to inspire and provoke change. The suffragette movement, which fought for women's right to vote, gained momentum in the early 20th century, and this ceramic figure serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the women who fought for their rights. Circa 1912.
