Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey as a monkey
What my beautiful Councils have given me! Sultan Mehmed V Reshad as a monkey representing Turkeys involvement in World War One, a European Conflagration which the Sultan was somewhat talked into getting involved with by his advisors, against his true will. Ths slant of the cartoon is really to make the conflict appear to Turkey more of a temptation than a fear. Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey (1844 - 1918). Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 until his death in 1918, Mehmed - original name Mehmed Resad - spent much of his life in seclusion until the forced abdication of his brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II at the hands of the Young Turks in 1909. A kindly gentle man with an interest in Persian literature, Mehmed was effectively little more than a puppet Sultan whose actions were directed by leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. Mehmed was little able to govern of his own accord and thus accepted direction from Young Turk leaders including Enver Pasha

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph print presents Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey in an unusual and satirical light as a monkey, symbolizing Turkey's involvement in World War One. The caption reads, "What my beautiful Councils have given me!" This humorous representation aims to portray the conflict as more of an allure or temptation than a fear for the Sultan. Mehmed V Reshad, born in 1844, served as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 until his death in 1918. Originally named Mehmed Resad, he spent much of his life in seclusion until the forced abdication of his brother, Sultan Abdul Hamid II, by the Young Turks in 1909. Mehmed was a kind and gentle man with a keen interest in Persian literature. However, his reign was marked by his inability to govern independently as he was effectively a puppet Sultan, with the leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress, including Enver Pasha, directing his actions. The Ottoman Empire, which had long been a major power in Europe and the Middle East, found itself drawn into the European conflagration of World War One, despite the Sultan's reluctance. This photograph print, created during this time, offers a witty commentary on the complex political dynamics at play, with the Sultan depicted as a monkey, seemingly enticed into the war by his advisors. The image serves as a reminder of the intricacies of international relations and the role of political manipulation in shaping historical events.
