EDITORS COMMENTS
Sultan Selim II, also known as Selim the Sot (Mest) or Selim the Blond (Sari Selim), ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1566 until his death in 1574. This stunning portrait, believed to have been created around 1570, captures the Sultan in his regal attire, adorned with a golden turban and a red and gold robe embroidered with intricate designs. The oval border, adorned with Arabic script and calligraphy, adds to the grandeur of the image. Selim II was the twenty-first Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the last of the Sultanate's Suleimanid dynasty. He was a military leader, known as a Ghazi (a warrior in the cause of Islam), and expanded the Ottoman territories in the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Selim II was also a patron of the arts and sciences, supporting scholars, poets, and artists. Despite his military and cultural achievements, Selim II is perhaps best known for his controversial personality. He was known for his love of wine and women, earning him the derogatory nickname "Sot" or "Mest." However, his reign was marked by stability and prosperity, and he left a lasting impact on the Ottoman Empire. This portrait is a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the Ottoman Empire during the late 16th century. The intricate details of Selim II's attire, the elegant script of the Arabic inscription, and the use of rich colors all contribute to the image's beauty and historical significance. The portrait is a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of the Ottoman Empire and its rulers.
