Summerleaze Sands, Bude
Summerleaze Sands, Bude. A workman collects sand in a small wagon on a rudimentary railway running across the beach, pulled by a horse. This old flange railway was built in order to meet the demand for beach sand. It consisted of angle rails, within vertical flanges of which the wheels of small wagons were guided (with hinged sections at the points), and extended from the beach, alongside the lock and basin to one branch, on which the contents of the wagons were tipped into barges or boats, and another branch by which the sand could be tipped from an upper level into railway goods wagons

1. Title: "A Glimpse into Bude's Past: Sand Collection at Summerleaze Sands using a Horse-Drawn Flange Railway" Summerleaze Sands, Bude, Cornwall, England, 19th Century - This evocative photograph captures a moment in time, showcasing the unique method used to collect sand from the expansive Summerleaze Sands beach in Bude, Cornwall. In the image, a determined workman is seen collecting sand in a small wagon, expertly guided by a horse on a rudimentary railway. This historical railway system, known as a flange railway, was built to meet the increasing demand for beach sand. The flange railway was an ingenious engineering solution, consisting of angle rails with vertical flanges that guided the wheels of small wagons. The railway extended from the beach, alongside the lock and basin, to two branches. One branch allowed the contents of the wagons to be tipped into barges or boats for transportation, while the other branch enabled the sand to be tipped from an upper level into railway goods wagons. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the rich history of Bude and its innovative approach to sand collection. The horse-drawn flange railway was an essential part of the local economy, contributing to the growth and development of the area. Today, Summerleaze Sands remains a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a chance to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Cornish coastline while reflecting on the intriguing history of this remarkable sand collection system.
