EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "Viajes de Gulliver a los países remotos" (Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World) by Francisco Goya y Lucientes Borasas, better known as Francisco Goya, depicts the renowned Irish satirist and clergyman, Jonathan Swift (1667-1745). Swift is best known for his literary masterpiece, "Gulliver's Travels," published in 1726. In this illustration, Swift is depicted in an upright, black and white scene, dressed in the attire of the time, with a quill pen in hand and a thoughtful expression on his face. The title of the work, "A Voyage to Lilliput," from the first part of "Gulliver's Travels," is inscribed in the top left corner. This engraving is a Spanish translation of the original work, published in Barcelona in 1884 by the Biblioteca de Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia). The intricate details of the engraving capture the essence of Swift's satirical wit and the imaginative world of Gulliver's travels, making it a fascinating and valuable addition to any collection of literary or historical art.
