Alcoholism Attack Carrie Kansas League Nation Temperance 1901
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the intense moment of the Temperance Gun attack on a bar in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, in 1901. Carrie Nation (1846-1911), an American activist and the leader of the Women's Christian Temperance Union's (WCTU) more militant wing, the "Hatchetators," is seen wielding a hatchet, while her fellow members of the League of American Women Against Alcoholism, also known as the "Hoodlums of the Prohibition Movement," brandish axes, hammers, and other weapons. The Temperance Movement, which aimed to reduce alcohol consumption and promote moral reform, had been gaining momentum since the late 19th century. Carrie Nation and her followers believed that the only effective way to combat the sale and consumption of alcohol was through direct action, such as raids on saloons and the destruction of their contents. On this particular day in 1901, the women stormed into the Mammoth Cave Saloon, located at 12th and Central Streets in Kansas City, armed with their weapons and determined to shut it down. They smashed the bar's mirrors, furniture, and bottles, causing significant damage. The police, who were sympathetic to the cause, did not intervene, and the women were hailed as heroes by the local press. The Temperance Gun attack on the Mammoth Cave Saloon became a symbol of the Women's Crusade against Alcoholism and helped to bring national attention to the cause. The movement eventually led to the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment in 1919, which prohibited the production, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors in the United States. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the determination and courage of the women who fought for social reform and the impact they had on American history.
