EDITORS COMMENTS
Thomas Goodall (1767-1832): A Naval Commander and Admiral in the Service of Haiti This evocative image captures the distinguished figure of Thomas Goodall, a British naval commander who played a significant role in the complex and tumultuous history of Haiti. Born in Scotland in 1767, Goodall joined the Royal Navy at a young age and rose through the ranks to become a respected and accomplished naval officer. However, Goodall's career took an unexpected turn when he was appointed as the British naval attaché to Haiti in 1801, during a time of intense political upheaval and conflict on the island. The Haitian Revolution, which began in 1791, had already claimed the lives of thousands and was far from over. Despite the challenges, Goodall proved to be an effective and diplomatic representative of British interests in Haiti. He worked to maintain peace between the various factions vying for power on the island, and played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of Amiens in 1802, which brought a brief period of peace between Haiti and the European powers. However, Goodall's loyalty to the British crown ultimately led to his downfall. In 1803, he was captured by the Haitian revolutionary army led by Toussaint L'Ouverture and was imprisoned for several years. He was eventually released in 1808, but was forced to leave Haiti and returned to Scotland. Despite his experiences in Haiti, Goodall continued to serve in the Royal Navy until his retirement in 1825. He passed away in Scotland in 1832, leaving behind a complex and intriguing legacy as a naval commander who played a pivotal role in the history of Haiti during a time of revolution and upheaval.
