EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the ancient Roman Emperor Tiberius Iulius Caesar (42 BC- 37 AD) is depicted in a solemn and regal pose, a testament to his powerful reign as the second emperor of the Roman Empire from 14 AD to 37 AD. Tiberius, a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, was adopted by his great-uncle and first Roman Emperor, Augustus, who named him his successor. Born in 42 BC, Tiberius began his political career under the patronage of Sextus Pompey, the son of the famous pirate and rival of Octavian (later known as Augustus). However, after Octavian's victory in the civil war, Tiberius joined him, and they formed an alliance that would lead to Tiberius' eventual adoption and succession. Tiberius is shown here wearing the traditional Roman toga, the symbol of Roman citizenship and the clothing worn by all free men in ancient Rome. The toga was a simple garment, consisting of a rectangular piece of fabric that was draped over the body and pinned at the shoulders. The toga was often adorned with various decorations, such as a broad stripe or a purple border, indicating the wearer's rank and status. This statue of Tiberius was discovered in Greece and is now on display at the Museum of Eleusis in Athens. The museum, which is dedicated to the ancient Greek cult of Demeter and Persephone, is a fitting location for this Roman emperor, as the Roman Empire had a significant impact on Greek civilization and absorbed many Greek cultural practices. Tiberius' reign was marked by a period of relative peace and stability, but it was also characterized by increasing autocracy and paranoia. Despite this, Tiberius remains an intriguing figure in the history of ancient Rome, and his legacy continues to be studied by historians and scholars around the world. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the art and history of the Roman Empire and the fascinating personage of Tiberius Iulius Caesar.
