1899 Asylum Asylums Erected Exceptional Individual Infirm Metropolitan Patients Pram Provided Pushes Renamed Requiring Tooting 1924 Senile
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a woman can be seen pushing a pram at the entrance to Tooting Bec Asylum, located at Tooting Graveney in Surrey. The asylum, which was erected between 1899 and 1903 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board, was designed to provide exceptional care for a unique group of patients. These included senile individuals and those with infirm epilepsy, who required individual attention that went beyond the capabilities of other mental health institutions at the time. The imposing entrance to Tooting Bec Asylum is marked by a large board bearing the name of the institution. The board's ornate design and the grandeur of the entrance gateway speak to the importance placed on the care and wellbeing of the patients who would reside within. The Metropolitan Asylums Board was a London-based organization responsible for the construction and management of mental health institutions across the city. Tooting Bec Asylum was one of many such institutions they established to address the growing need for specialized care for those with mental health conditions. In 1924, the name of the asylum was changed to Tooting Bec Mental Hospital, reflecting the evolving understanding of mental health care and the shift towards a more medicalized approach. Later still, it would become known simply as Tooting Bec Hospital. Despite the changes in name and approach, the mission of Tooting Bec Asylum remained constant: to provide compassionate, individualized care for those in need. The woman in the photograph, with her pram and determined expression, embodies the spirit of care and attention that defined this remarkable institution.
