Torghatten, Norway

Torghatten (Trolls Hat) is a hill in Norway renowned for its distinctive hole piercing straight through the hillside (not a printing error!). The hill is so named after a tale of a Troll whos hat was pierced by an arrow, whilst saving a beautiful woman from the amorous advances of a less-mannered troll. The discarded hat turned to stone and formed the hill! Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Torghatten, Norway: A Natural Marvel with a Mythical Tale (circa 1910s) Torghatten, a captivating hill in Norway, stands proudly against the backdrop of the picturesque fjord landscape. This unique geological formation, located in the Romsdal Peninsula, is renowned for its distinctive hole piercing straight through the hillside. The tunnel, measuring approximately 160 meters in length and 42 meters in width, is a natural wonder that has intrigued visitors for centuries. The name Torghatten is deeply rooted in Norwegian folklore. According to legend, a Troll named Torgeir resided on the hill, guarding the entrance to the fjord. One day, he attempted to woo a beautiful local woman, who was none too pleased with his advances. In an act of self-defense, her lover shot an arrow through the troll's hat, causing it to fall to the ground. Enraged, the troll tried to pursue the couple, but the arrow's tip had pierced the hill, leaving a permanent mark. The discarded hat turned to stone, forming the distinctive hole in the hill. Torghatten's mythical tale adds to its allure, making it a popular destination for both nature enthusiasts and those seeking a touch of the fantastical. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, captures the timeless beauty of the hill and the enchanting story it holds. The natural tunnel, carved out by the elements, stands as a testament to the power of legend and the enduring allure of the natural world.
