EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century illustration depicts the Purple-Faced Langur, scientifically known as Trachypithecus vetulus, also referred to as the Purple-Faced Leaf Monkey. The illustration is taken from the Loten Collection, an extensive compilation of natural history prints, and was painted by Pieter Cornelius de Bevere around 1754-57. The Purple-Faced Langur is native to Asia, specifically in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal, and is a member of the Cercopithecidae family, which includes Old World monkeys. The monkey's distinctive features include its purple face, which is a result of the presence of pigments in its skin. The illustration provides a detailed anatomical representation of the monkey, showcasing its agile body and long, prehensile tail, which are adaptations for its arboreal lifestyle. The monkey is perched on a branch, grasping a leaf with one hand, demonstrating its dexterity and ability to move easily through the forest canopy. The Purple-Faced Langur is a herbivore, feeding primarily on leaves, fruits, and flowers. It is a social animal, living in groups of up to 30 individuals, and is an important species in its ecosystem due to its role as a seed disperser. The illustration provides a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating mammal, which continues to captivate researchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Pieter Cornelius de Bevere was a Flemish painter and illustrator, active in the 18th century. His work was widely published and contributed significantly to the scientific record of natural history during this period. The Loten Collection, which includes this illustration, was compiled by Joan Gideon Loten, a Dutch physician and naturalist, between 1710 and 1789. The collection is now an invaluable resource for researchers and historians studying the natural history of the 18th century.
