EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning marble sculpture depicts Marcus Ulpius Traianus, better known as Trajan, who reigned as Roman Emperor from 53 to 117 AD. Trajan is considered one of the most successful and capable rulers in the history of the Roman Empire. He was born in Italicum, a small town in present-day Romania, and rose through the ranks of the Roman army to become emperor after the death of Nerva. Trajan is renowned for his military conquests, particularly his campaigns against the Dacians in present-day Romania and the Parthians in the Middle East. His military successes brought prosperity and stability to the empire, and he is also known for his extensive public works projects, including the construction of the Trajan's Market in Rome, which was the largest commercial building in the ancient world. This portrait of Trajan, now housed in the Piacenza Civic Museum in Italy, is a testament to the emperor's enduring legacy. The sculpture captures the strong, masculine features of the emperor, with his piercing gaze and well-defined jawline. Trajan's imperial robes are depicted in rich, vibrant colors, adding to the lifelike quality of the sculpture. The upright posture and confident expression of the emperor convey his strength and leadership, making this a powerful and evocative work of art from the Early Roman Empire.
