EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century illustration, Plate 79 from the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants, depicts the Pompadour Green Pigeon, Treron pompadora, also known as the Sri Lanka Green Pigeon. The painting is by Pieter Cornelius de Bevere, a Flemish artist born in 1710 and active until 1789. The Pompadour Green Pigeon is a species of Columbidae, or pigeon, native to Sri Lanka. The bird is named after the French noblewoman Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour, who was known for her elaborate hairstyles and love of green. In this illustration, the Pompadour Green Pigeon is depicted perched gracefully on a branch, its vibrant green plumage contrasting with the brown bark of the branch. The bird's head is turned towards its left, revealing its distinctive red eye and orange-yellow beak. A pair of these birds can be seen in the illustration, adding to the sense of tranquility and harmony in the scene. The Pompadour Green Pigeon is a sauropsid, a group of vertebrates that includes reptiles and birds. It is a member of the Columbiformes order, which includes pigeons and doves. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this beautiful bird, which was a subject of great interest during the 18th century. The attention to detail in the painting, from the intricate patterns on the bird's feathers to the textured bark of the branch, is a testament to the skill and artistry of Pieter Cornelius de Bevere. This illustration is a valuable historical record of the Pompadour Green Pigeon and a stunning work of art in its own right.
