EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts Lady Olave Baden-Powell, the widow of the renowned founder of the Scout Movement, Sir Robert Baden-Powell, as she performs the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the new Baden-Powell House in South Kensington, London, on 17 October 1959. The site for the new building was acquired in 1956, and renowned architect Ralph Tubbs was appointed to design and construct the new hostel and conference venue. The trowel used by Lady Olave in this momentous occasion is now a cherished artifact, showcasing the inscription "Laid by Lady Olave Baden-Powell, 17th October 1959." The building was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1961 and went on to receive several awards for its innovative design and architectural merit. Baden-Powell House, located in Queens Gate, has remained a significant hub for scouting activities and conferences ever since. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history of the Scout Movement and the dedication of its leaders, like Lady Olave, who have contributed to its enduring legacy. The 1950s, a time of post-war optimism and growth, are encapsulated in this image, making it a valuable piece of historical memorabilia.
