EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna (nee Princess Dagmar of Denmark, 1847-1928) in a stunning maroon velvet gown designed by the renowned Parisian couturier Charles Frederick Worth. The photograph, taken in November 1894, depicts the Empress and Dowager Tsaritsa in the prime of her life, just a few years before her husband Tsar Alexander III's death. The dress, which Maria Feodorovna is wearing in this image, is a testament to the imperial court's penchant for imported European fashion. The carnation pattern embroidered in shades of gold adds an exquisite touch to the velvet fabric, making it a standout piece from the nineteenth century. This historic garment, a symbol of imperial elegance and refinement, was included in an exhibition of nineteenth-century costume at the State Hermitage Museum in 1993. Maria Feodorovna's dress, which she wore on various formal occasions during her time as Tsaritsa, has survived to this day, offering a glimpse into the opulent world of the Russian imperial court. As the wife of Tsar Alexander III, sister of Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, and mother of Tsar Nicholas II, Maria Feodorovna's life was marked by significant historical events, making this engraving not only a beautiful work of art but also an essential piece of historical documentation.
