Anne Baron Jacques Ducreux Turgot

EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de Turgot (1727-1781), was a prominent French statesman and economist of the 18th century. Born in Paris, Turgot showed an early aptitude for learning, and at the age of 18, he entered the Paris Parlement as an advocate. However, it was his work in the field of economics that would bring him to national prominence. In 1761, Turgot was appointed Controller-General of Finances by King Louis XV, a position he held until 1774. During his tenure, Turgot implemented a series of economic reforms aimed at modernizing the French economy. He abolished numerous taxes and monopolies, established a system of free trade, and introduced a new currency. These reforms, known as the Turgot Edicts, were controversial and met with resistance from various interest groups, leading to their eventual repeal. Despite the failure of his economic reforms, Turgot continued to serve the king in various capacities, including as a member of the Council of State and as the Minister of the Navy. He was also a prolific writer and philosopher, and his works on economics and political theory had a significant influence on the Enlightenment. This portrait of Turgot, painted by Jean-Baptiste Greuze's student, Pierre-Louis Ducreux, captures the intensity and intelligence of the statesman. Turgot's piercing gaze and serious expression convey his deep commitment to his work and his unwavering belief in the power of reason to improve society. The portrait also serves as a reminder of the complex and often contentious political landscape of 18th-century France, where economic reform and enlightened governance were often met with resistance and opposition.
