EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Stella Polare, the polar exploration vessel of the renowned Italian explorer, Umberto Cagni (1863-1932). Cagni is best known for leading an expedition that set out to reach the North Pole by dogsled in 1900. Although they did not achieve their ultimate goal, Cagni and his team reached the northernmost point ever explored up to that time on April 25, 1900. Following this polar achievement, Cagni returned to the Italian naval service. He led relief efforts during the devastating 1908 Messina earthquake, participated in the colonial conquest of Libya between 1911 and 1912, served in World War I, and retired as an admiral in 1923. He was later named to the Italian Senate. The Stella Polare played a crucial role in Cagni's polar expedition, braving the harsh Arctic conditions to support the explorers' journey. This image serves as a testament to Cagni's remarkable achievements and the indomitable spirit of exploration.
