EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical print captures the view from Government House at Cape Coast Castle in 1873, showcasing the headquarters of the British on the Gold Coast. The image reflects a pivotal moment in Ghana's history, as it marks the transition from an uneasy relationship between the British and the Acing people of central Ghana to official colonial rule. In December 1873, tensions reached a breaking point when the British launched a devastating attack on Kumasi, virtually destroying the Asanti capital. This event ultimately led to Ghana being declared a crown colony on July 24, 1874. Following this declaration, the administrative capital was moved from Cape Coast Castle to Accra. The significance of this momentous shift in power is palpable in this photograph, with its sweeping views of both land and sea. It serves as a poignant reminder of colonialism's impact on Ghanaian society and culture. As we reflect on this important chapter in history captured by Rights Managed photography, we are reminded of the complex dynamics at play during this period and how they continue to shape modern-day Ghana.
