EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph, taken in 1902, captures the breathtaking view from the corner of 5th Avenue and 57th Street in New York City. At this time, the iconic Cornelius Vanderbilt II house stood proudly on the site, a symbol of wealth and decadence. Built in 1883, the mansion featured a ground floor that doubled as a drawing room, dining area, and art gallery. The second floor housed a salon and music room, while the conservatory graced the third floor. The remaining floors were dedicated to bedrooms. But Cornelius Vanderbilt II wasn't content with just one impressive mansion. He purchased all the property facing 5th Avenue on this block and hired renowned architects George B. Post and Richard Morris Hunt to build an even larger home. The result was a mansion that filled the entire block front, creating one of the most flamboyant homes in this area of New York City. The grandeur of the Vanderbilt mansion is evident in this photograph, with its intricate architectural details, lush greenery, and elegant facade. The mansion's presence on 5th Avenue helped to solidify the area's reputation as a hub of opulence and luxury. This image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when wealth and extravagance were on full display in the heart of New York City.
