EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts three intriguing fish species: the Violet Goby or Broussonet's Goby (Gobioides broussonnetii), the Sand Goby (Pomatoschistus minutus), and a possible Hippolyte Goby or Cloquet's Goby (identification uncertain). The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, created the original artwork for this engraving. Pretre's expertise in capturing the intricate details of these aquatic creatures is evident in the vibrant colors and lifelike textures of the fish. The engraving was executed by Massard under the direction of Turpin. The stipple engraving technique used in this print allowed for the creation of fine, detailed lines and subtle shading, resulting in a highly realistic representation of the fish. The Violet Goby, also known as Broussonet's Goby, is a small, elongated fish with a distinctive violet coloration. It is native to the western Atlantic Ocean and is often found in shallow, sandy areas. The Sand Goby, or Pomatoschistus minutus, is a small, brownish-gray fish with a sandy coloration that allows it to blend seamlessly into its environment. It is native to the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. The third fish in the illustration is more difficult to identify, with possible candidates being the Hippolyte Goby or Cloquet's Goby. This beautiful and historically significant print is a testament to the skill and dedication of the naturalists and artists of the past, who worked tirelessly to document and preserve the natural world for future generations.
