EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting is Plate 37b (1:37) from Sir Joseph Banks' commission of natural history drawings during Captain James Cook's first voyage aboard the Endeavour (1768-1771). The artwork, created by Sydney Parkinson, depicts the Blue-black Grassquit, scientifically known as Volatinia jacarina. This small, vibrant bird is a member of the Icteridae family, specifically the subfamily Thraupinae, and is native to the Caribbean and Central America. The Blue-black Grassquit is shown perched on a long, slender monocotyledon, likely an angiosperm, with its distinctive blue-black plumage and bright yellow eyes. Monocots, or monocotyledons, are a large group of flowering plants characterized by having a single cotyledon in their seeds. Angiosperms, or flowering plants, are a diverse group that includes over 90% of all living plant species. The Blue-black Grassquit is an omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of seeds, fruits, and insects. In this illustration, it appears to be pecking at the seeds of the monocot, showcasing its agility and feeding behavior. This artwork is a testament to the incredible discoveries made during Captain Cook's expedition, which brought back a wealth of knowledge about the natural world. Sydney Parkinson's meticulous attention to detail and use of vibrant colors make this watercolor a true masterpiece of 18th-century natural history illustration. The Blue-black Grassquit, along with the many other species documented during this voyage, continues to captivate and inspire naturalists and artists alike.
