As the worst of the bombardment raged on, Piper Laidlaw, a Scottish soldier, observed that his company was becoming disheartened due to the effects of gas. The sound of the bagpipes galvanized the soldiers, and they charged out of the trench to join the assault. Piper Laidlaw's heroic actions did not go unnoticed. For his extraordinary bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British and Commonwealth honors system.
