Welcome Back to the Somme, March 1918
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant and powerful drawing by Lieutenant Will H. Dyson, an Australian official war artist who captured the raw emotions and realities of the First World War. Dyson, who joined the Australian Imperial Force in 1914 and was wounded twice before becoming an official war artist in 1915, produced a vast body of work depicting the Australian soldiers at the Western Front. This particular drawing, created in March 1918, captures the moment of reunion between a soldier and a woman on the banks of the Somme River in France. The soldier, weary and battle-scarred, dismounts from his horse as he returns to the temporary safety of the rear lines. The woman, her face etched with concern and relief, reaches out to embrace him, her eyes filled with tears. The horse, a faithful companion, stands patiently behind them, its ears pricked in anticipation of its master's return. The drawing is a testament to the human cost of war and the enduring bond between soldiers and their loved ones. Dyson's skillful use of light and shadow, as well as his ability to capture the nuances of emotion and expression, make this a standout piece from his extensive body of work. This image is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families during the First World War. Dyson's drawings were exhibited in London and published in his book "Australia at War" in November 1918. His work continues to be celebrated as an important historical record of the Australian experience in the First World War. This drawing, with its timeless depiction of the human spirit in the face of adversity, remains a powerful and moving tribute to the soldiers of the Australian Imperial Force who served on the Western Front during the Great War.
