Welsh - Caesars Nose - CWGC Cemetery

This small cemetery stands on the site of a German redoubt which was called Fortin 17. Fighting around this area began in 1915. The German defence line had a sharp bend in it which reduced the distance between the opposing sides to some 50 yards. Drawn on a map the line looked like a Roman nose - hence (Caesars). The cemetery is in the middle of a field. It was begun in July 1917 and used until November 1918. There are 68 burials. Date: 2004

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative image captures the tranquility and solemnity of the Caesars Nose CWGC Cemetery in Belgium, a small yet significant burial ground with a rich historical backdrop. The cemetery stands on the site of Fortin 17, a German redoubt named for the sharp bend in the defensive line that reduced the distance between the opposing sides during the First World War, resembling a Roman nose - hence the name 'Caesars Nose'. The fighting in this area began in 1915, with the German defence line having a sharp bend that brought the trenches of the opposing sides to within just 50 yards of each other. The cemetery, located in the middle of a field, was established in July 1917 and was in use until November 1918. It holds the graves of 68 soldiers who lost their lives during the Great War, particularly in the Ypres (Ieper) sector. The Caesars Nose Cemetery is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War, and a testament to the enduring legacy of those who gave their lives for their countries."
