EDITORS COMMENTS
This photographic postcard, hailing from the early 1900s, presents a serene rural scene of The Mill at West Blatchington, nestled in the picturesque East Sussex countryside near Brighton. The mill, a fine example of a "smock" windmill, stands proudly against the backdrop of a clear blue sky. This design of wooden tower mills earned its name due to their six-sided shape and cedar boarding, which mirrored the smock frocks worn by the millers of the period. The mill, now a Grade II listed building, boasts an intriguing history. Its six sails, which have replaced the original ones, are a testament to its former functionality as a working windmill. However, around the turn of the century, the mill ceased operation, marking the end of an era. Despite its inactivity, The Mill at West Blatchington continues to captivate visitors with its rustic charm and historical significance. The surrounding landscape, dotted with a barn and other agricultural structures, adds to the idyllic scene. The cedar boarding, weathered by time, gives the mill an authentic, aged appearance. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when windmills were a common sight in the English countryside. The mill's quiet presence stands as a reminder of the rich history and rural beauty that can still be found in East Sussex and beyond.
