EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.3, Plate 36, dates back to 1888. The illustration showcases two distinct species of Weka, native to New Zealand: the Western Weka (Gallirallus australis australis) and the Buff Weka (Gallirallus australis hectori). The Western Weka, depicted on the left, is characterized by its dark plumage, with a distinct white patch on its lower back and rufous underparts. This bird is native to the western and southwestern regions of New Zealand's South Island. The Western Weka is an omnivorous ground-dwelling bird, known for its ability to fly short distances but primarily moves around on the ground. The Buff Weka, illustrated on the right, is easily identified by its buff-colored underparts, contrasting with its darker upperparts. This species is native to the eastern and northeastern parts of New Zealand's South Island and Stewart Island. The Buff Weka is also an omnivorous bird, and its diet consists of various invertebrates, seeds, fruits, and even small vertebrates. Both species of Weka are part of the Rallidae family, which is a group of wading birds, and the order Gruiformes, which includes cranes, rails, and their allies. The Weka's unique appearance and adaptability to various habitats have made them an essential part of New Zealand's rich avian biodiversity. This exquisite watercolor painting by JG Keulemans not only captures the essence of these fascinating birds but also serves as a testament to the remarkable natural history exploration that took place during the late 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these birds to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and uniqueness even today.
