Wilkes, and Liberty--A New Song

Wilkes, and Liberty--A New Song. A broadside comprising an engraving printed above two columns of verse in letterpress. The former represents two groups; in one the Earl of Bute, armed with a dagger, tears away the robe of the fainting Britannia, and is about to stab her bare bosom; Earl Temple, armed with a sword, defends Britannia with that weapon, and thrusts forward a shield which is inscribed North Briton. W. Pitt, who is on his knees, receives the victim in his arms. The other group shows Wilkes, armed with a sword, and having a shield marked North Briton, joined with C. Churchill, who is dressed in his clerical robes, and carries a cudgel; they are driving away a party of Scottish clients of Lord Bute; one of Wilkss feet is placed on the neck of Tobias Smollett. Date 1763 or later. Wilkes, and Liberty--A New Song. A broadside comprising an engraving printed above two columns of verse in letterpress. Wilkes and Liberty--A New Song

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and provocative political broadside from the 18th century, printed in England around 1763 or later. The image on the broadside is a visual representation of the political turmoil and tensions of the time, with two distinct scenes separated by an engraving. In the first scene, Britannia, personifying England, is being attacked by the Earl of Bute, who is depicted as a villainous figure, armed with a dagger and intent on stabbing her bare bosom. Earl Temple, armed with a sword, defends Britannia, and Pitt, on his knees, receives her in his arms. This scene symbolizes the struggle between those who support the corrupt Earl of Bute and those who stand for the liberty and protection of England. The second scene shows Wilkes and Churchill, armed with a sword and a cudgel respectively, driving away a group of Scottish clients of Lord Bute. Wilkes, who is wearing a shield marked "North Briton," is joined by Churchill, who is dressed in his clerical robes. One of Wilkes' feet is placed on the neck of Tobias Smollett, who is depicted as one of Bute's supporters. This scene represents the alliance between Wilkes and Churchill and their efforts to resist the influence of Bute and his Scottish supporters. The broadside's title, "Wilkes and Liberty--A New Song," suggests that it was intended to be sung or recited to a tune, making it a powerful tool for spreading political messages and rallying support. The image and text on the broadside reflect the intense political divisions of the time and the ongoing struggle for power and influence in 18th-century England.
