In 1883, he was appointed as the Dean of Chichester, and in 1898, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Ripon. During his tenure as Bishop of Ripon, Carpenter gained the favor of King Edward VII, who appointed him as his royal chaplain in 1902. In 1912, Carpenter was created a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in recognition of his services to the monarchy.
