EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "William Pitt Fessenden: A Prominent American Statesman and Financier of the 19th Century" William Pitt Fessenden (1806-1869), an influential figure in American politics and finance, is depicted in this striking portrait photograph. Born on February 13, 1806, in Durham, New Hampshire, Fessenden would go on to make significant contributions to the economic and political landscape of his country. Fessenden's career began in law, and he was admitted to the bar in 1828. He quickly rose to prominence in New Hampshire politics, serving as a member of the state legislature and later as governor from 1845 to 1848. In 1853, Fessenden was appointed to the United States Senate, where he served until 1861. During his time in the Senate, Fessenden was a vocal advocate for the abolition of slavery and played a key role in the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. However, his stance on slavery would evolve, and he became an ardent supporter of the Union cause during the American Civil War. In 1861, Fessenden was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Abraham Lincoln. In this role, he oversaw the financing of the Union war effort, implementing measures such as the Legal Tender Act and the creation of the National Currency. These actions helped to stabilize the economy and provide the necessary funds for the Union to wage war against the Confederacy. After leaving the Treasury Department in 1864, Fessenden returned to the Senate, where he continued to advocate for the Union cause and support reconstruction efforts. He passed away on December 13, 1869, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated public servant and a key figure in American history. This photograph captures William Pitt Fessenden in the prime of his career, a testament to his impact on American politics and finance during the 19th century. The image serves as a reminder of the significant role he played in shaping the country's economic and political landscape.
