1761 1834 Carey Missionaries Missionary Orientalist

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of William Carey (1761-1834), a pioneering English Orientalist and missionary, who is often referred to as the "Father of Modern Missions." Carey's groundbreaking work in India marked the beginning of a new era in Christian missionary activities. Born in a small village in Somerset, England, Carey was a self-taught scholar who developed a deep interest in the Bible and languages at a young age. He was particularly drawn to the Bible's call to spread the gospel to all nations. In 1793, Carey and four companions embarked on a perilous journey to India, where they faced numerous challenges, including language barriers, cultural differences, and political instability. Despite these obstacles, Carey's unwavering determination and passion for spreading the word of God led to the establishment of the Serampore Mission in 1800. Over the next several decades, Carey and his colleagues translated the Bible into multiple Indian languages, including Bengali, Marathi, and Sanskrit. They also established schools, hospitals, and other institutions to promote education and improve the lives of the local population. This portrait, taken around the turn of the 19th century, captures Carey in the prime of his career, with a serious and contemplative expression that reflects his deep commitment to his work. The intricately patterned turban he wears signifies his respect for Indian culture and his efforts to bridge the gap between the two worlds. The portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Carey's enduring legacy as a trailblazer in the field of Christian missions and a champion of interfaith understanding and dialogue.
