EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Captain Edward K Deeming of the 15th/19th King's Royal Hussars, depicts the Rhineland and the Battle South of Udem on March 4, 1945. The image captures the moment of triumph after the Schlieffen Line, a crucial defensive position of the German army during World War II, had been breached. The Challenger tank in the foreground, equipped with a formidable 17-pounder gun and a Browning 0.30-inch machine gun, sits proudly amidst the muddy terrain of Hellmannshof, south of Udem. The crew, led by Lieutenant Ted Deeming, is seen in the photo, each member performing their role with focus and determination. Clockwise from Lieutenant Deeming, who is seen with his binocular case, are Trooper Ken G. Harrison (operator), Trooper D.J. Cain (gunner), Trooper S.T. Ellis (loader), and Trooper P.F. 'Smacker' Smith (driver). Their faces bear the marks of battle-weariness, yet their spirits remain undeterred. This photograph is one of 74 copy prints taken during World War Two, in North West Europe between 1944 and 1945. It serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who fought in this pivotal period of history.
