EDITORS COMMENTS
Bembridge, Isle of Wight, England: A Timeless Tradition of Redwing Class Yacht Racing This evocative photograph captures the essence of yacht racing in the early 1900s, as Redwing class boats glide majestically across the Solent off the picturesque town of Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. The Redwing class, a gaff-rigged wooden design, was born out of a meeting at the Bembridge Sailing Club in 1896. In just ten days, Charles E. Nicholson, a renowned yacht designer, created the Redwing design, and by 1898, sixteen boats graced the waters of the Solent. The boats were built by Camper and Nicholsons of Gosport, a prestigious shipbuilding company that has a rich history in yacht design and construction. The Redwing class quickly gained popularity due to its elegant design, competitive spirit, and accessibility to sailors. In 1935, Charles Nicholson updated the Redwing design, and in 1989, the fleet underwent a total revamp, transitioning to fibreglass hulls while retaining its classic gaff rigging. The Redwing class continues to be a cherished part of the yachting community, attracting sailors from around the world who seek to experience the thrill of competition on the water. As the boats race past each other, their sails billowing in the wind, it's easy to be transported back in time to an era when sailing was a leisurely pursuit for the passionate and the competitive alike. The Redwing class represents a timeless tradition in the world of yachting, a testament to the enduring allure of the sea and the spirit of competition.
