EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an exquisite representation of two intriguing bird species: the Yellow-billed Oxpecker (Buphagus africanus) and the Orange-wattled Kokako (Callaeas cinerea). The illustration is taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The Yellow-billed Oxpecker is a small bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by its distinctive yellow bill and black and white plumage. Oxpeckers are known for their association with larger animals, such as buffalo and zebras, where they feed on insects and ticks that inhabit their hosts. The Orange-wattled Kokako, on the other hand, is a large, flightless, and sadly extinct bird that was endemic to New Zealand. It is easily recognizable by its orange wattles and blue-grey plumage. The Kokako was a forest-dwelling bird, and its extinction is believed to be due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Madame Rebel, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this historical artwork continue to captivate and inspire ornithologists and natural history enthusiasts alike.
