Auerbach Corps Epsom Surrey University Albert Officers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of young men in the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC) of the Royal Fusiliers, engaged in a leisurely outing at Epsom, Surrey during the early years of the First World War. Among them is Albert Auerbach, seated in the front row, third from the left. The year is estimated to be between 1914 and 1915. The UOTC was an educational initiative aimed at providing university students with military training, with the intention of commissioning them as officers in the British Army in times of war. The young men in this photograph are seen here enjoying a ride in a charabanc, a type of open-topped bus commonly used for group outings during this period. Their uniforms, complete with berets and rifles, bear testament to their military affiliation. The serene scene belies the impending conflict that would soon engulf Europe and the world. Albert Auerbach, a young man with a promising future ahead of him, would unfortunately not survive the war. He was killed in action on the Western Front in 1918. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the lives of these young men, who answered the call to duty in the name of their country, and the sacrifices they made during the First World War.
