EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the timeless charm of Lincoln's historic High Bridge, this print takes us on a journey through centuries of architectural marvel. Standing proudly over the tranquil River Witham, this iconic bridge is not only a vital link between Lincoln's bustling High Street but also an embodiment of its rich heritage. The intricate design of the bridge incorporates ancient stone ribs that are believed to be part of one of the oldest masonry arch bridges in the country. Originally built with stone and later enhanced with brickwork, it has witnessed numerous expansions throughout history. From accommodating a chapel in 1235 to housing timber buildings in the mid-16th century, each addition tells a story etched into its very structure. With its original semi-circular barrel vaulted span adorned by five elegant ribs spanning 22ft, High Bridge exudes an aura of grandeur and resilience. Even today, it continues to serve as a lifeline for both pedestrians and vehicles alike. What sets this remarkable bridge apart from all others across Britain is its unique feature - a secular medieval building still standing upon it. As we gaze at this mesmerizing scene captured in January 1953, children delightfully feed ducks while graceful swans glide along the calm waters below. This print transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate not just the architectural brilliance but also the harmonious coexistence between man-made structures and nature's beauty.
