The principle landowner in this picturesque village and parish is the home of the famous foxhound pack, the woodland pytohley. The market cross was formely the pivot around wich a travelling fair was set up three times a year. Neighbouring farmers used to set up their butter and other produce around the steps of the cross - hence the name Butter Cross.
