A sobering thought from Mirounga Leonina. Man, what a party that was! And it shows. Spot, the southern elephant seal, did a bit of celebrating in the fish pond at Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland, recently. The poor chap took things a bit too far. Now hes paying for it. He still sees pink men before his eyes. Mind you, Spot-real name Mirounga leonina-should be getting used to all that drink and rich food by now. Considering he spends 50 weeks of the year in the pond...eating 300 fish a day. Still, hes just a youngster of seven. Though a rather weighty one at two tons. What does he do the other two weeks of the year? Spot goes on shore to grow its pretty cold back home in South Georgia. And not much better in Edinburgh. Spot " swims off" the results of all that rich food and drink. January 1969 P000756

Yet despite being just seven years old, Spot is already quite experienced in these matters. But what does Spot do during those other two weeks? Well, he heads ashore to grow in South Georgia where temperatures are frigid - not much better than Edinburgh! During this time away from his aquatic habitat, Spot "swims off" all the effects of his rich diet and libations.
