Nuneaton may have yielded another important archaeological discovery - the site of a

Nuneaton may have yielded another important archaeological discovery - the site of a Knights Templars house. The Knights Templars were members of a religous order who, during the Crusades, took vows of chastity, poverty and obedience and swore to save the Holy Land by fighting the infidel. From ancient documents it is known that the Knights Templars had a house in the Nuneaton district from about 1185. The site vanished a long time ago and has remained a mystery. A Ministry of Works dig near Bermuda Village appears to have solved the puzzle. Mr. Steven Taylor, a freelance archaeologist, is in charge of the dig. He is aided by Mrs. Eileen Gooder, of the Department of Extra Mural Studies at Birmonghsm University. She has been making a special study of the Knights Templars for nine years. Delving into local history seven years ago, she found references to Temple House, Arbury, as the likely site: because of a Maltese Cross on a wall. " But I felt there was something wrong with this theory, " said Mrs. Gooder. So, working from old maps and documents, various trial holes were dug near Bermuda Village over the next few years, first from the west and then from the east. They led to the site where the present dig has uncovered foundations of a fairly large house and outbuildings.. " All the evidence pointed this way, " said Mrs. Gooder. :" this is the first full-scale dig and everything is falling into place now. I think there is no doubt at all that this is site of the Knights Templar house." Other digs near Bermuda in recent years have revealed what was not known before - that it was an important medieaval pottery making centre. Pottery and tiles unearthed are being sent to museums.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, Mr. and Mrs. Gooder are seen examining a remarkable structure that they have recently discovered during an archaeological dig on the Arbury Estate in Nuneaton. This significant find may potentially unveil the long-lost site of a Knights Templar house, which has remained shrouded in mystery for centuries. The Knights Templars were devout members of a religious order who took sacred vows to protect the Holy Land during the Crusades. Historical documents indicate that they had a presence in the Nuneaton district dating back to 1185, but their house vanished without a trace over time. Led by Mr. Steven Taylor, a skilled freelance archaeologist, and assisted by Mrs. Eileen Gooder from Birmingham University's Department of Extra Mural Studies, this excavation near Bermuda Village seems to have finally solved the puzzle surrounding Temple House's whereabouts. Mrs. Gooder's tireless research into local history led her to believe that Temple House could be located at Arbury due to its intriguing Maltese Cross symbol found on one of its walls. Through years of meticulous work involving old maps and documents, trial holes were dug from different directions until evidence pointed them towards this particular spot where foundations of an expansive house and outbuildings emerged. This groundbreaking discovery not only sheds light on Nuneaton's medieval past but also reveals that Bermuda was once an essential pottery-making center during those times. The unearthed pottery fragments and tiles will soon find their way into museums for further study and preservation. As everything falls seamlessly into place with each passing day at this momentous dig site, there is little doubt left among experts like Mrs. Gooder that they have indeed uncovered the elusive Knights Templar house - an extraordinary achievement in unraveling history's enigmas.
