Allied Invasion of Normandy, Northern France following the D-Day landings on 6th June

Allied Invasion of Normandy, Northern France following the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944.
British army soldiers of 12 Platoon, B Company, 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers Scots, seen here moving cautiously through alongside a ruined wall in the Normandy village of St. Manvieu-Norrey, remaining cautious of German snipers stationed in the church tower.
The picture is taken on 26th June, the first day of Operation Epsom (also known as the First Battle of the Odon), a British offensive intended to outflank and seize the German-occupied city of Caen, during the Battle of Normandy.
The infantry faced the hardest of tasks, advancing against an almost invisible enemy, acutely vulnerable to machine guns, mortar fire and the snipers bullet.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the bravery and determination of British army soldiers during the Allied Invasion of Normandy in World War Two. Taken on 26th June 1944, it shows members of 12 Platoon, B Company, 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers cautiously moving through the war-torn village of St. Manvieu-Norrey. Aware of the lurking danger posed by German snipers stationed in a church tower, these brave soldiers navigated their way alongside a ruined wall. The date marked the beginning of Operation Epsom, also known as the First Battle of the Odon, which aimed to outflank and seize Caen from German occupation. The infantry faced an arduous task as they advanced against an almost invisible enemy. Their vulnerability to machine guns, mortar fire, and sniper bullets made every step forward perilous. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these courageous men who fought for freedom and peace during one of history's most significant conflicts. It highlights both the dangers faced by soldiers on urban battlefields and their unwavering commitment to achieving victory.
